Discotheque Riva Cancelled!

Written by  Thursday, 1.8.2013.

One of the highest profile summer events in Split - Discotheque Riva -  will be probably cancelled. This dance spectacle was supposed to take part for the fourth time on Split promenade Riva on August 8 and 9, but promoters have so far failed to pay the rent for the biggest public space in Split to the city authorities. According to the contract signed with the previous city administration, they were supposed to pay a little less than 10,000 euros and about 65,000 euros for insurance by June 9. After three deadline extensions, the organizers asked the City to give them Riva for free. The Mayor declined that request, and decided to terminate the contract only seven days before event.

Since it started four years ago, Discotheque Riva annually gathered tens of thousands of people on the biggest dance floor one can imagine. This year the stellar line-up included Fatboy Slim and The Underworld, but the latter announced two days ago they won't perform in Split. It was the first signal of financial problems with the event. On their Facebook page The Underworld explained band's the cancellation.

"We are very sorry to announce that Underworld will not perform at Discotheque Riva, in Split, Croatia on August 9th. We had hoped that by being flexible we could assist the promoter in ensuring that all the necessary arrangements for a great show were put in place. However, this has not been possible and we have had to accept that our performance will not go ahead. We thank all our fans for their continuing support", said The Underworld.

It's still not clear how ticket money will be refunded, since promoters all requests for comments and promised an official statement. It will probably be published on the official web site and on the event's Facebook page.
